Understanding Your VPS 3 Salary: What Reaches Your Bank Account
The VPS 3 salary ranges from $81,496 to $98,955 per year depending on pay point and value range.
Your VPS 3 Salary: From Gross to Net
When you see a vps 3 salary advertised, the number is the annual base pay before tax, Medicare, and other deductions. To compare job offers fairly, you need to know what actually reaches your bank account each fortnight. This guide walks you through the current VPS 3 pay rates and how to estimate your take-home pay.
Current VPS 3 Pay Rates
Under the Victorian Public Service Enterprise Agreement 2024, the VPS 3 classification has two value ranges:
- VPS 3.1: $81,496 to $90,227 per year (six progression steps)
- VPS 3.2: $91,971 to $98,955 per year (five progression steps)
These rates are effective from 1 May 2026. Your exact pay point (e.g. 3.1.4) appears on your payslip. The next increase is 3% from 1 May 2027, as confirmed by FairWork Mate.
Estimating Your Take-Home Pay
Your take-home pay is what remains after the Australian Taxation Office deducts income tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 tax year, the tax rates are:
- Up to $18,200: nil
- $18,201 to $45,000: 15c per $1 over $18,200
- $45,001 to $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c per $1 over $45,000
- $135,001 to $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c per $1 over $135,000
- Over $190,000: $51,370 plus 45c per $1 over $190,000
You may also be eligible for the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO), which reduces tax by up to $700 for incomes under $37,500, then phases out. The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income, with reduced rates for singles earning between $28,011 and $35,013.
Example: A VPS 3.2.3 salary of $95,465 per year:
- Income tax: $4,020 + 30% × ($95,465 – $45,000) = $4,020 + $15,139.50 = $19,159.50
- LITO: $325 – 1.5c × ($95,465 – $45,000) = $325 – $756.98 = nil (phased out)
- Medicare levy: 2% × $95,465 = $1,909.30
- Total deductions: $21,068.80
- Annual take-home: $74,396.20
- Fortnightly take-home: $2,861.39

Comparing Job Offers
When evaluating a VPS 3 role, consider:
- Superannuation: Your employer contributes 12% on top of your base salary from 1 July 2026. This is not deducted from your take-home. A job ad quoting $95,465 plus super means your total remuneration is $106,920.80.
- Salary packaging: The Victorian Public Service offers salary packaging options (e.g., novated leases, super contributions) that can reduce your taxable income and increase take-home pay. See Salary packaging for details.
- Progression: Within a value range, you move up a step each performance cycle if criteria are met. At the top step, you receive a 1.5% lump sum instead.
The Medicare Levy and Thresholds
Full-time employees earning above $35,013 pay the full 2% Medicare levy. The latest published single-person thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. If your taxable income is between these amounts, the levy is reduced at 10c per dollar over the lower threshold. For a VPS 3 salary, you will almost certainly pay the full 2%.
What About the Award?
The Victorian Public Service Award 2016 sets minimum rates for VPS grades. For Grade 3, the award minimums are $76,998 to $92,178 depending on value range. However, the enterprise agreement overrides the award and provides higher pay. Always check which agreement applies to your role.
Next Steps
To get a precise estimate of your take-home pay, use the Tax and Medicare guide. Remember that this is an estimate only – your actual pay may vary due to HELP/HECS repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or payroll rounding. Always refer to your payslip for exact figures.
