How the figure is worked out

The clearance tool is an annual resident estimate, split into 26 fortnights. It is not a notice of assessment and it is not the tax table your payroll uses.

Who it applies to

An Australian resident for the full year, claiming the tax-free threshold, with no dependants in the Medicare calculation, no HELP or HECS debt, and no Medicare levy surcharge. Non-residents do not get the tax-free threshold, so this figure is the wrong one for them.

Income tax

Resident rates for 2026–27, as published by the Australian Taxation Office: nil to $18,200, then 15%, 30%, 37%, and 45%. The low income offset is applied on top and cannot reduce tax below zero.

Medicare levy

2% of taxable income. The single-person reduction uses the latest thresholds published by the Australian Taxation Office: no levy at or below $28,011, and 10 cents per dollar over that line until $35,013. Those thresholds are the ones on the current reduction table. A later income year can move them. Anyone above the upper threshold, including a full-time minimum wage, pays the full 2%.

Super

The super guarantee is 12% from 1 July 2026, on ordinary time earnings up to $270,830. “Plus super” leaves that amount out of take-home. “Includes super” sets it aside first, then taxes what remains. Real packages can include allowances that are not ordinary time earnings. This tool treats the whole number as ordinary time.

Benchmarks

  • National minimum wage: $26.44 an hour, or $1,005 a week, from 1 July 2026. Fair Work Ombudsman.
  • All employees: $1,579 average weekly total earnings in May 2026. Includes part-time. Australian Bureau of Statistics.
  • Full-time ordinary time: $2,084 a week in May 2026, before overtime and before employer super. Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Annual benchmark figures are the weekly amount times 52, rounded to the nearest dollar. The Bureau advises caution when a weekly survey is turned into a year.

Guides

Guides discuss a question in ordinary language and point back to the clearance tooland the benchmarks. Where a guide names a role, the pay is not a single national rate. The chart on that page only uses a figure when the question itself contains one, or when it is the minimum wage or the national full-time average.
