Why a UK salary calculator can't tell you your Australian take-home pay
Your take-home pay varies by income; for the national minimum wage of $26.44/hour ($1,004.90/week), after tax and Medicare you'd take home a different amount each pay period depending on your total earnings.
Introduction
If you've been using a UK salary calculator to estimate your Australian pay, stop. The tax systems are fundamentally different. Australia uses a progressive tax scale with a tax-free threshold, a separate Medicare levy, and a Low Income Tax Offset (LITO). This guide explains how an Australian resident works out what actually clears into their bank account after income tax and the Medicare levy.
Tax rates for 2026–27
For the 2026–27 income year, Australian residents pay tax on taxable income according to these brackets:
- $1 – $18,200: Nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
- $190,001 and over: $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000
These rates are from the Australian Taxation Office. The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) can reduce your tax by up to $700 if your taxable income is below $37,500, phasing out completely by $66,667. LITO can only reduce your tax to zero, not create a refund.
Medicare levy
The Medicare levy is an additional 2% of your taxable income for most residents. However, low-income earners may pay less or nothing. The latest published single-person thresholds are $28,011 (lower) and $35,013 (upper). If your income is below $28,011, you pay no levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, the levy is 10c per dollar over the lower threshold. Above $35,013, the full 2% applies. These thresholds are for singles; family thresholds differ.
Using the calculators
The Australian Taxation Office provides two key calculators. The income tax calculator estimates your tax refund or debt for past years, including the Medicare levy surcharge and study loan repayments. The tax withheld calculator helps employers (or you) work out how much tax to withhold from each pay period. It includes the Medicare levy and study loan contributions.
Moneysmart's income tax calculator is a simple tool that shows your marginal tax rate and after-tax income after removing tax and the Medicare levy. It does not include tax offsets or the Medicare levy surcharge.
How to use them
To estimate your take-home pay, start with your gross annual salary. If your job advertisement says "plus super", remember that super is not deducted from your take-home pay – it's an employer contribution on top. For 2026–27, the super guarantee rate is 12% on earnings up to $270,830.
Enter your taxable income into one of the calculators. The result will show income tax payable, Medicare levy payable, and your income after tax and Medicare. This is your estimated take-home pay before any other deductions like salary sacrifice or HELP repayments.
Benchmarks
Fair Work sets the national minimum wage at $26.44 per hour and $1,004.90 per week (38 hours) from 1 July 2026. That's an annualised salary of $52,255. The ABS reports that all employees average $1,579.20 per week ($82,118 annually) and full-time adult ordinary time earnings average $2,083.70 per week ($108,352 annually). These figures exclude employer super contributions.
Your actual take-home pay will depend on your exact income, tax offsets, and whether you pay the full Medicare levy. A UK salary calculator cannot account for Australia's tax-free threshold, LITO, or Medicare levy structure.
Conclusion
For a reliable estimate of your Australian take-home pay, use the official ATO and Moneysmart calculators. They incorporate current tax rates, the Medicare levy, and LITO. Remember that these are estimates only – your actual tax is calculated when you lodge your return. For more details, see our guides on Take-home pay and Tax and Medicare.
Questions
How is the Medicare levy calculated on my salary?
The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income for most residents. If you earn below $28,011 (single), you pay no levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, the levy is 10c per dollar over the lower threshold. Above $35,013, the full 2% applies. These are the latest published single-person thresholds.
What is the tax-free threshold for Australian residents?
For 2026–27, the first $18,200 of your taxable income is tax-free. Income between $18,201 and $45,000 is taxed at 15c per dollar over $18,200. Higher brackets apply up to $190,000, above which the rate is 45c per dollar.
How can I estimate my take-home pay accurately?
Use the ATO's income tax calculator for a refund or debt estimate, or the tax withheld calculator for pay-as-you-go amounts. Moneysmart's income tax calculator also shows your marginal tax rate and after-tax income. These tools account for the Medicare levy but not the surcharge or study loans.
