Tram Driver Salary Melbourne: What You Take Home After Tax in 2026–27
A qualified Yarra Trams driver earns $95,695 base salary per year, but with shift penalties and overtime the median actual earnings are $102,579 (ATO 2023–24).
Understanding the tram driver salary Melbourne landscape
If you're looking at a tram driver salary Melbourne figure, the first thing to know is that base pay comes from an enterprise agreement, not a modern award. The Yarra Trams Enterprise Agreement 2023 sets weekly rates that increase each July and January. From 1 July 2026, a qualified driver (Level 3) earns $1,840.29 per week, which works out to $95,695 per year before tax. That's the minimum you'd get for 38 ordinary hours, but most drivers work rotating rosters that attract penalty rates for early mornings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
Base rates under the Yarra Trams agreement
The agreement covers several classifications. New starters begin as a Tram Driver/CSE trainee: Level 1 for the first nine months at $1,545.76 per week ($80,380 per year), then Level 2 from nine to twelve months at $1,675.07 ($87,104). After one year you move to Level 3, the main qualified rate. After 20 years you reach Level 4 at $1,863.08 per week ($96,880). Depot Trainers and Traffic Officer/Drivers earn $1,976.17 per week ($102,761). These rates are all base pay before shift loadings and overtime.
For comparison, the national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week – so even a trainee tram driver earns well above that. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains that award-covered employees must get at least the minimum rates in their award or agreement, and enterprise agreements often set higher pay.
What tram drivers actually earn (ATO data)
The Australian Taxation Office's Taxation Statistics for 2023–24 show the median salary or wage for tram drivers was $102,579. That's the middle point of all tram drivers who lodged a tax return, including part-time and casual workers. Full-time drivers with regular penalty shifts often earn more than the base rate, which explains why the median is higher than the $95,695 base. By comparison, train drivers had a median of $134,468 and bus drivers $65,481.
How to estimate your take-home pay
Once you know your gross annual salary, you can work out what lands in your bank account after income tax and the Medicare levy. The 2026–27 tax rates for Australian residents are:
- $0 – $18,200: Nil tax
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each dollar over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each dollar over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each dollar over $135,000
- Over $190,000: $51,370 plus 45c for each dollar over $190,000
You also get the low-income tax offset (LITO): up to $700 if your taxable income is $37,500 or less, then it phases out. For a salary of $95,695, the LITO is $325 minus 1.5c per dollar over $45,000, which works out to about $325 – $760 = nil. So no LITO at that income.
Example: qualified tram driver on $95,695
Using the 2026–27 tax brackets:
- Tax on first $18,200: $0
- Tax on $18,201 to $45,000 ($26,800): $4,020
- Tax on $45,001 to $95,695 ($50,695): $15,208.50 (30c per $1)
- Total income tax: $4,020 + $15,208.50 = $19,228.50
- Plus Medicare levy at 2%: $1,913.90
- Total deductions: $21,142.40
- Take-home pay: $95,695 – $21,142.40 = $74,552.60 per year
- Fortnightly take-home: about $2,867 (before any HELP or salary sacrifice)
This is a resident estimate only. It excludes HELP/HECS repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, and payroll tax-table rounding. Your actual take-home may differ slightly due to your individual circumstances.
Medicare levy thresholds
The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income, but if you earn below certain thresholds you pay a reduced rate or none. For 2026–27, the latest published single-person thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. If your income is below $28,011 you pay no Medicare levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013 you pay a shade rate of 10c per dollar over the lower threshold. Full-time tram driver salaries are well above these thresholds, so you'll pay the full 2%.
Superannuation on top
Your employer must pay superannuation at 12% from 1 July 2026 on your ordinary time earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For a $95,695 salary, that's an extra $11,483.40 paid into your super fund. This is not deducted from your take-home pay – it's on top of your salary. When you see job ads quoting a salary, check whether it's 'plus super' or 'including super'. Most enterprise agreements quote base rates before super.
Penalty rates and overtime
Tram drivers at Yarra Trams get penalty rates for unsocial hours:
- Saturday: time and a half
- Sunday: double time (minimum four hours)
- Public holidays: double time and a half
- Overtime: time and a half for the first three hours, double time after that
These add significantly to your weekly pay. A driver working a typical rotating roster with weekend shifts could easily earn 20–30% above the base rate. That's why the ATO median of $102,579 is a more realistic figure for what you might actually earn.
