How to Use a Salary Calculator Sydney Residents Can Trust for Take-Home Pay
The amount that reaches your bank account depends on your taxable income, the Medicare levy, and any tax offsets like the LITO.
Understanding Your Take-Home Pay in Australia
When you receive your pay, the amount that lands in your bank account is your after-tax salary—also called take-home pay. This is what remains after the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) deducts income tax and the Medicare levy. If you are looking for a salary calculator Sydney residents can use, our tool on this site provides an estimate based on the latest 2026-27 tax rates and thresholds.
The Key Deductions: Income Tax and Medicare Levy
For the 2026-27 tax year, Australian residents pay tax on a sliding scale. The first $18,200 you earn is tax-free. After that, you pay:
- 15 cents for each dollar between $18,201 and $45,000
- 30 cents for each dollar between $45,001 and $135,000
- 37 cents for each dollar between $135,001 and $190,000
- 45 cents for each dollar over $190,000
In addition, the Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. However, if your income is below the single lower threshold of $28,011, you pay no levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, you pay a shade rate (10 cents per dollar over the lower threshold). Above $35,013, you pay the full 2%. These are the latest published thresholds.
The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO)
The LITO can reduce the tax you pay. For 2026-27, the maximum offset is $700 if your taxable income is $37,500 or less. It then reduces by 5 cents per dollar until $45,000, where it becomes $325. From $45,001 to $66,667, it reduces by 1.5 cents per dollar. The offset cannot reduce your tax below zero.
Example: Minimum Wage Worker
Let's take the national minimum wage set by Fair Work Ombudsman from 1 July 2026: $26.44 per hour, $1,004.90 per week, or $52,255 per year (38 hours per week, 52 weeks). Using the tax brackets:
- Tax on $52,255: $4,020 + 0.30 × ($52,255 - $45,000) = $4,020 + $2,176.50 = $6,196.50
- Medicare levy: 2% of $52,255 = $1,045.10
- LITO: $325 - 0.015 × ($52,255 - $45,000) = $325 - $108.83 = $216.17
- Total deductions: $6,196.50 + $1,045.10 - $216.17 = $7,025.43
- Take-home pay: $52,255 - $7,025.43 = $45,229.57 per year, or about $1,739.60 per fortnight
This is an estimate. Your actual pay may differ due to rounding, salary packaging, or other factors. For a more precise figure, use our Take-home pay guide or the After-tax salary calculator.
How Superannuation Fits In
Super is not deducted from your take-home pay if your salary is quoted as 'plus super'. Your employer contributes 12% of your ordinary time earnings (up to $270,830) on top of your salary. That money goes into your super fund and is not available until retirement. If your salary is 'including super', then the super contribution is part of your total package and is deducted before you receive your pay. Always check your employment contract.
Using a Salary Calculator for Sydney Workers
If you live and work in Sydney, your tax and Medicare are the same as anywhere in Australia—there are no state-specific income taxes. However, your cost of living and salary expectations may differ. A salary calculator Sydney workers can use will apply the same national rates. Our calculator on this site lets you enter your gross salary and see an estimate of your after-tax amount, including the Medicare levy and LITO. It is designed for residents only and excludes HELP/HECS repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary sacrifice.
Important Notes
- This estimate is not a tax assessment. Always check with the ATO or a tax professional.
- The figures use the 2026-27 tax year. Rates may change in future years.
- The minimum wage benchmark is $26.44 per hour and $1,004.90 per week. Do not confuse with $26.46.

Questions
How is take-home pay calculated for a full-time worker on the minimum wage?
For a full-time worker on the national minimum wage of $26.44 per hour (38 hours per week, $1,004.90 per week), the annual salary is $52,255. After applying the 2026-27 tax rates: the first $18,200 is tax-free, then $4,020 plus 30c for each dollar over $45,000. The tax on $52,255 is $4,020 + 0.30 × ($52,255 - $45,000) = $4,020 + $2,176.50 = $6,196.50. The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income = $1,045.10. The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) reduces tax by $700 (since income is under $37,500? Actually $52,255 is above $45,000, so LITO is $325 minus 1.5c per $1 over $45,000 = $325 - 0.015 × ($52,255 - $45,000) = $325 - $108.83 = $216.17. So net tax = $6,196.50 - $216.17 + $1,045.10 = $7,025.43. Take-home pay = $52,255 - $7,025.43 = $45,229.57 per year, or about $1,739.60 per fortnight. This is an estimate; actual pay may vary due to rounding and other factors.
What are the Medicare levy thresholds for a single person in 2026-27?
The latest published single-person Medicare levy thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. If your taxable income is below $28,011, you pay no Medicare levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, you pay a shade rate of 10 cents per dollar over the lower threshold. Above $35,013, you pay the full 2% Medicare levy on your entire taxable income. These thresholds apply to the 2026-27 tax year.
Does the salary calculator include superannuation in take-home pay?
No, superannuation is not deducted from your take-home pay if your salary is quoted as 'plus super'. The employer contributes 12% of your ordinary earnings (up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830) on top of your salary. Your take-home pay is your salary after income tax and the Medicare levy. If your salary is quoted as 'including super', then super is part of your total package and would be deducted before you receive your pay. Our salary calculator assumes a 'plus super' arrangement unless stated otherwise.
