Understanding Your Salary After Tax

When you look at a job advertisement or your payslip, the figure that matters most is the amount that reaches your bank account. This is your salary after tax – your gross earnings minus income tax and the Medicare levy. Superannuation is not deducted from this amount if your salary is quoted as 'plus super', as the 12% super guarantee (from 1 July 2026) is paid on top by your employer.

How Income Tax Is Calculated

The Australian Taxation Office applies a progressive tax scale for residents in 2026–27. The first $18,200 is tax-free. Then:

  • $18,201 to $45,000: 15c for each dollar over $18,200
  • $45,001 to $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each dollar over $45,000
  • $135,001 to $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each dollar over $135,000
  • Over $190,000: $51,370 plus 45c for each dollar over $190,000

You may also be eligible for the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO). The maximum LITO is $700 at taxable incomes up to $37,500. It then reduces by 5c per dollar until $45,000, and further reduces by 1.5c per dollar from $45,000 to $66,667. LITO can only reduce your tax to zero, not create a refund.

The Medicare Levy

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. For singles, the latest published thresholds are $28,011 (lower) and $35,013 (upper). If your income is between these, a shading rate of 10c per dollar applies. Below $28,011, no levy is payable. Full-time salaries typically pay the full 2%.

Take-Home Pay for Key Benchmarks

Using the benchmarks from Fair Work and the ABS, here are estimated annual take-home figures (after income tax and Medicare) for the 2026–27 year. These are estimates only and exclude HELP/HECS, the Medicare levy surcharge, salary sacrifice, and payroll rounding.

National Minimum Wage

Fair Work sets the minimum wage at $26.44 per hour and $1,004.90 per week, giving an annual rounded figure of $52,255. After tax and Medicare, your take-home is approximately $45,230 per year. That's about $1,739 per fortnight.

All Employees Average (Including Part-Time)

The ABS average weekly total earnings are $1,579.20, or $82,118 annually. After deductions, your take-home is roughly $65,320 per year, or about $2,512 per fortnight.

Full-Time Adult Ordinary Time Earnings

Full-time ordinary time earnings average $2,083.70 per week, or $108,352 annually. After tax and Medicare, you take home approximately $83,160 per year, or about $3,198 per fortnight.

Where Your Salary Sits

Comparing these figures shows how your salary after tax relates to the broader workforce. The minimum wage take-home is about 55% of the full-time ordinary take-home. If you earn the all-employees average, your take-home is roughly 79% of the full-time ordinary figure. Use the Take-home pay guide to see how different incomes stack up.

Additional Considerations

This guide provides a resident estimate only. It does not account for HELP/HECS repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, salary sacrifice arrangements, or the rounding used in payroll tax tables. Always consult the Australian Taxation Office for your personal situation. Super is not deducted from take-home if your salary is quoted as 'plus super' – the 12% super guarantee is paid by your employer on top of your salary.

Questions

What is salary after tax?

Salary after tax is the amount deposited into your bank account after income tax and the Medicare levy are deducted. It does not include super if your salary is quoted as 'plus super'.

How is the Medicare levy calculated?

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. For singles with income between $28,011 and $35,013, a shading rate of 10c per $1 applies. Below $28,011, no levy is payable. Above $35,013, the full 2% applies.

Does the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) affect my take-home pay?

Yes, LITO reduces your income tax by up to $700 for taxable incomes up to $37,500, then phases out. It can only reduce your tax to zero, not create a refund.
