Understanding the Pharmacist Salary Melbourne Award Rates

If you are a pharmacist working in Melbourne, your minimum pay is set by the Pharmacy Industry Award 2020 (MA000012). Fair Work publishes the current rates, which apply from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2026. The award covers all community pharmacy employees in Australia, including Melbourne.

For a full-time pharmacist working 38 ordinary hours per week, the minimum weekly rate is $1,586.30, which equates to $41.74 per hour. Higher classifications include:

  • Experienced Pharmacist: $1,737.40 per week ($45.72 per hour)
  • Pharmacist in Charge: $1,778.40 per week ($46.80 per hour)
  • Pharmacist Manager: $1,981.60 per week ($52.15 per hour)

These are the base rates. You may also be entitled to penalty rates for morning, evening, Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday work, as well as allowances such as the home medicine reviews allowance of $106.40 per week. Your actual pharmacist salary Melbourne may be higher than the award minimum depending on your employer and experience.

Estimating Your Take-Home Pay After Tax and Medicare

Your take-home pay is what reaches your bank account after income tax and the Medicare levy are deducted. For the 2026–27 tax year, the Australian Tax Office uses the following resident tax brackets:

  • Up to $18,200: Nil
  • $18,201 to $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
  • $45,001 to $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
  • $135,001 to $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
  • Over $190,000: $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000

The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) can reduce tax for lower incomes, but for a full-time pharmacist earning above $45,000, the offset phases out completely.

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. The latest published single-person thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. If your taxable income is above $35,013, you pay the full 2%. For incomes between those thresholds, a shading reduction applies (10c per $1 over $28,011).

Example: Pharmacist on Award Minimum

Take a Pharmacist earning the minimum weekly rate of $1,586.30. Annualised: $1,586.30 × 52 = $82,487.60. This is your gross salary (before tax). Assuming no other deductions or penalties:

  • Tax: $4,020 + 30% of ($82,487.60 – $45,000) = $4,020 + $11,246.28 = $15,266.28
  • LITO: $325 – 1.5c per $1 over $45,000 = $325 – $562.31 = $0 (phased out)
  • Medicare levy: 2% × $82,487.60 = $1,649.75
  • Total deductions: $15,266.28 + $1,649.75 = $16,916.03
  • Annual take-home: $82,487.60 – $16,916.03 = $65,571.57
  • Fortnightly take-home: $65,571.57 ÷ 26 = $2,522.00 (rounded)

This is an estimate only. Your actual take-home will vary if you have HELP/HECS debt, salary sacrifice, or the Medicare levy surcharge. Use our Take-home pay guide for a more personalised calculation.

Superannuation Is Extra

From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. When you see a pharmacist salary Melbourne advertised, it is often quoted as “plus super”. That means the super is paid on top of your base salary and does not reduce your take-home pay. For the award minimum pharmacist, your employer would contribute an additional $9,898.51 per year to your super fund.

Penalty Rates and Allowances Boost Your Pay

If you work unsocial hours, your hourly rate increases. For example, a Pharmacist working Monday to Friday between 7am and 8am receives $62.61 per hour (150% of the base rate). Saturday morning work (7am to 8am) pays $83.48 per hour (200%). These penalty rates can significantly increase your gross income and therefore your take-home pay after tax.

Questions

What is the minimum pharmacist salary in Melbourne under the award?

The Pharmacy Industry Award sets minimum weekly rates: Pharmacist $1,586.30, Experienced Pharmacist $1,737.40, Pharmacist in charge $1,778.40, Pharmacist manager $1,981.60 as of 1 July 2026. These are the base rates before penalties and allowances.

How is Medicare levy calculated on a pharmacist salary?

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income for full-time salaries above the single upper threshold of $35,013. For incomes between $28,011 and $35,013, a shading reduction applies. Full-time pharmacists earning above $35,013 pay the full 2%.

Does the pharmacist salary include superannuation?
