Nurse Anesthetist Salary: What You Take Home After Tax in Australia
Pay for a nurse anesthetist in Australia varies by classification and experience, with minimum rates set by the Nurses Award; for example, a Registered Nurse Level 2 starts at $1,504.40 per week.
Nurse Anesthetist Salary in Australia: A Guide to Take-Home Pay
If you're a nurse anesthetist in Australia, your salary is governed by the Nurses Award 2020 (MA000034), which sets minimum rates for registered nurses. Unlike the US, the term "nurse anesthetist" here refers to a registered nurse with postgraduate qualifications in anaesthetics, working under the supervision of medical anaesthetists. Your actual pay depends on your classification level and years of experience.
Understanding the Award Rates
Fair Work publishes pay guides that list minimum weekly and hourly rates for each classification. For a Registered Nurse Level 2 (a common level for nurse anesthetists), the minimum weekly rate is $1,504.40 for Pay Point 1, rising to $1,580.30 for Pay Point 4 and thereafter. At Level 3, Pay Point 1 starts at $1,631.20 per week. These rates are for full-time employees working 38 hours per week (or an average of 38 hours).
Your employer may pay above the award, especially if you have specialist qualifications or work in a high-demand area. However, the award provides the legal minimum.
From Gross Salary to Take-Home Pay
To work out what lands in your bank account, you need to subtract income tax and the Medicare levy. Superannuation is paid by your employer on top of your salary and does not reduce your take-home pay.
Let's take an example: a nurse anesthetist classified as RN Level 2 Pay Point 1 earning $1,504.40 per week. Annualised (52 weeks), that's $78,228.80.
Using the 2026–27 tax rates:
- Tax-free threshold: $0 – $18,200
- 15% on the next $26,800 ($18,201 – $45,000) = $4,020
- 30% on the next $33,228.80 ($45,001 – $78,228.80) = $9,968.64
- Total tax before offsets: $13,988.64
- Low Income Tax Offset (LITO): at $78,228.80, LITO is $325 minus 1.5% of income over $45,000. That's $325 – (0.015 × $33,228.80) = $325 – $498.43 = $0 (LITO reduces to zero above $66,667).
- Medicare levy: 2% of $78,228.80 = $1,564.58 (full rate, as income exceeds $35,013).
- Total deductions: $13,988.64 + $1,564.58 = $15,553.22
- Annual take-home: $78,228.80 – $15,553.22 = $62,675.58
- Weekly take-home: $62,675.58 ÷ 52 = $1,205.30
This is an estimate only. Your actual tax may differ if you have HELP/HECS debt, salary sacrifice arrangements, or other deductions.
Medicare Thresholds
The latest published single-person Medicare thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. If your taxable income is below $28,011, you pay no Medicare levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, the levy is phased in at 10 cents per dollar over the lower threshold. For a full-time nurse anesthetist, you will almost certainly pay the full 2%.
Superannuation
From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12%. Your employer must contribute this on top of your salary, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For the example above, that's an extra $9,387.46 per year paid into your super fund. This is not deducted from your take-home pay.
Comparing with Other Roles
The national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour and $1,004.90 per week (from 1 July 2026). A nurse anesthetist at RN Level 2 earns well above that. The average full-time adult ordinary time earnings in Australia are $2,083.70 per week, so a nurse anesthetist at Level 2 is below that average, but higher classifications (Level 3, 4, 5) can exceed it.

Questions
What is the minimum hourly rate for a nurse anesthetist under the Nurses Award?
Under the Nurses Award 2020, a Registered Nurse Level 2 Pay Point 1 has a minimum hourly rate of $39.59, and a Registered Nurse Level 3 Pay Point 1 has a minimum of $42.93. These rates apply from 1 August 2026.
How is Medicare levy calculated on a nurse anesthetist salary?
For the 2026–27 tax year, the Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income. If your income is below $28,011 (single), you pay no levy; between $28,011 and $35,013, the levy is phased in at 10 cents per dollar over the lower threshold. Full-time salaries above $35,013 pay the full 2%.
Does the nurse anesthetist salary include superannuation?
No, the salary figures in the Nurses Award are base rates before super. From 1 July 2026, employers must contribute an additional 12% superannuation on top of your salary, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year.
