What changes your fortnightly take-home pay

When you look at your NRL salary, the number on your contract isn't what lands in your bank account each fortnight. Three main factors change that figure: income tax brackets, the Medicare levy, and superannuation. Understanding each one helps you plan your budget and avoid surprises at tax time.

Income tax brackets for 2026–27

The Australian Taxation Office sets progressive tax rates for residents. For the 2026–27 income year, the rates are:

  • $0 – $18,200: Nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
  • $190,001 and over: $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000

These rates don't include the Medicare levy of 2%. Your employer uses these brackets to withhold tax from each pay period. The more you earn, the higher the marginal rate on the top portion of your income. For example, if your NRL salary is $150,000, the first $135,000 is taxed at lower rates, but the remaining $15,000 is taxed at 37c per dollar plus 2% Medicare.

The Medicare levy adds 2%

Most Australian residents pay the Medicare levy at 2% of taxable income. However, if your taxable income is below $28,011 (single), you pay no levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, the levy is phased in at 10c per dollar over the lower threshold. Above $35,013, you pay the full 2%. For a full-time worker on the national minimum wage of $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week, or about $52,255 per year), the Medicare levy applies in full. The latest published single-person thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013.

Super is on top, not deducted

From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings. If your NRL salary is quoted as a base figure, your employer must pay super on top of that. If it's quoted as total remuneration (including super), the super component is part of the total but still goes into your super fund, not your bank account. Always check which way your contract is written. The maximum super contribution base for 2026–27 is $270,830 – earnings above that don't attract compulsory super.

Putting it together: a fortnightly example

Let's take a hypothetical NRL salary of $120,000 per year (excluding super). Your fortnightly gross pay is about $4,615.38 (assuming 26 fortnights). Tax withheld is calculated using the ATO's fortnightly tax table, which applies the brackets and Medicare levy. Using the 2026–27 rates, the annual tax on $120,000 is:

  • Tax on first $18,200: $0
  • Tax on $18,201–$45,000: ($45,000 – $18,200) × 0.15 = $4,020
  • Tax on $45,001–$120,000: ($120,000 – $45,000) × 0.30 = $22,500
  • Total income tax: $4,020 + $22,500 = $26,520
  • Medicare levy: $120,000 × 0.02 = $2,400
  • Total tax and levy: $28,920
  • Annual take-home: $120,000 – $28,920 = $91,080
  • Fortnightly take-home: $91,080 ÷ 26 ≈ $3,503.08

This is an estimate. Your actual withholding may differ due to the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) if your taxable income is under $66,667, or if you have HELP/HECS debt, salary sacrifice, or other adjustments. The ATO's tax tables round amounts to the nearest dollar, so your pay slip may vary by a few cents.

How the minimum wage compares

Fair Work Ombudsman sets the national minimum wage at $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for employees not covered by an award. That's about $52,255 per year. After tax and Medicare, a single person earning that amount would take home roughly $43,000 annually – about $1,654 per fortnight. This gives you a benchmark against which to compare your NRL salary.

Key takeaways

  • Your fortnightly take-home depends on your tax bracket, Medicare levy, and whether super is included in your contract figure.
  • The 2026–27 tax rates are lower than previous years due to stage 3 tax cuts, meaning more of your income stays in your pocket.
  • Always use the Take-home pay calculator or refer to the Tax and Medicare guide for a personalised estimate.
  • If your NRL salary is below the average full-time adult ordinary time earnings of $2,083.70 per week (ABS, May 2026), your take-home will be proportionally lower.

Remember: this is not a tax assessment. For exact figures, consult your payroll officer or a registered tax agent.

Questions

How is my fortnightly take-home pay calculated from my NRL salary?

Your employer withholds PAYG tax based on the ATO tax tables and the 2% Medicare levy. Super is paid on top of your salary at 12% from 1 July 2026, not deducted from your take-home. Use the ATO tax tables for weekly, fortnightly, or monthly withholding.

What are the 2026-27 tax brackets for Australian residents?

The first $18,200 is tax-free. Then 15c per $1 up to $45,000, 30c per $1 up to $135,000, 37c per $1 up to $190,000, and 45c per $1 over $190,000. The Medicare levy adds 2% on taxable income above the thresholds ($28,011 single, $35,013).

Does my NRL salary include super?

Typically, NRL contracts are quoted as total remuneration including super. Your employer must contribute 12% of your ordinary time earnings to super from 1 July 2026. Check your contract to see if the figure is base salary plus super or inclusive.
