Understanding the Minimum Wage Brisbane: Gross Pay vs Take-Home Pay
The national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week (gross), but your take-home amount will be lower after tax and the Medicare levy.
Minimum Wage Brisbane: What You Actually Take Home
If you're looking at a job advertised at the minimum wage Brisbane, it's easy to assume that the figure quoted is what lands in your bank account. But there's a common mix-up between the gross salary, the total employment package, and your actual take-home pay. This guide breaks down each component so you know exactly what to expect.
The National Minimum Wage in Brisbane
The Fair Work Ombudsman sets the national minimum wage, which applies to all employees in Australia not covered by an award or agreement. From 1 July 2026, that rate is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week (based on 38 ordinary hours). This is the minimum gross pay before any deductions. If you work in Brisbane under an award (e.g., hospitality, retail, or healthcare), your minimum rate may be higher – always check your specific award.
Gross Pay vs Take-Home Pay
Your gross pay is the amount before tax, the Medicare levy, and any other deductions. Your take-home pay is what actually reaches your bank account after these are withheld. For a full-time worker on the minimum wage, the annualised gross salary is about $52,255. But you won't keep all of that.
Income Tax (2026–27)
Australia uses a progressive tax system. For a resident earning $52,255:
- First $18,200: tax-free
- Next $26,800 (up to $45,000): taxed at 15 cents per dollar = $4,020
- Remaining $7,255 (over $45,000): taxed at 30 cents per dollar = $2,176.50
- Gross tax before offsets: $6,196.50
You are also entitled to the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO). At $52,255, LITO is $325 minus 1.5 cents per dollar over $45,000 = $325 – $108.83 = $216.17. So your net tax is about $5,980.
Medicare Levy
The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income, but there are thresholds for singles. The latest published thresholds are $28,011 (lower) and $35,013 (upper). If you earn below $28,011, you pay no levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, you pay a reduced rate (10 cents per dollar over the lower threshold). Above $35,013, you pay the full 2%. On $52,255, the full 2% applies: $1,045.
Estimated Take-Home
After tax ($5,980) and Medicare ($1,045), your annual take-home is approximately $45,230. That's about $870 per week or $1,739 per fortnight. Use our Take-home pay guide for more details.
Superannuation Is Extra
A common confusion is whether the minimum wage includes super. It does not. Your employer must pay an additional 12% superannuation (from 1 July 2026) on top of your ordinary time earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super is paid into a fund, not to you directly. So the total employment cost for a minimum wage worker is about $58,526 (gross wage plus super).
Common Mistakes When Comparing Salaries
- Mixing gross and net: Always check whether a salary is quoted as gross or after tax. Job ads usually show gross.
- Forgetting the Medicare levy: Even if you earn just above the threshold, the 2% levy reduces your take-home.
- Ignoring award rates: The national minimum wage is a floor; many Brisbane jobs pay above it under an award or enterprise agreement.
- Assuming super is part of your pay: Super is additional and not available for spending until retirement.

Questions
Is the minimum wage in Brisbane different from the national minimum wage?
No. The national minimum wage set by the Fair Work Commission applies across Australia, including Brisbane. As of 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for a 38-hour week. Some awards or enterprise agreements may set higher rates.
How much of the minimum wage Brisbane actually goes into my bank account?
Your take-home pay depends on your tax situation. For a full-time worker earning the minimum wage ($52,255 annualised), after income tax and the 2% Medicare levy (assuming you are single and above the $35,013 threshold), you would take home roughly $42,000–$43,000 per year. Does the minimum wage include superannuation?
No. The minimum wage is your gross pay before super. Your employer must pay an additional 12% superannuation on top of your ordinary time earnings (from 1 July 2026). Super is not deducted from your take-home pay; it is paid into a separate fund.
