Minimum Casual Wage Australia: What You Take Home After Tax
The national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week), with casual employees receiving at least $33.05 per hour including the 25% loading.
Understanding the Minimum Casual Wage in Australia
If you are a casual employee in Australia, your minimum pay is set by the Fair Work Ombudsman. From 1 July 2026, the national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for a 38-hour week. Casual employees receive a 25% loading, bringing the minimum casual wage to $33.05 per hour. This loading compensates for the lack of paid leave entitlements like annual and sick leave.
Most employees are covered by an award, which may set higher minimum rates. You can check your specific award using Fair Work’s Pay Calculator. The figures here apply to award-free employees; if you are covered by an award, your minimum rate could be different.
How Your Take-Home Pay Is Calculated
Your take-home pay is what reaches your bank account after income tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 tax year, the Australian Tax Office applies these resident tax rates:
- $0 – $18,200: Nil tax
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each dollar over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each dollar over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each dollar over $135,000
- Over $190,000: $51,370 plus 45c for each dollar over $190,000
You also pay the Medicare levy of 2% of your taxable income. If your income is below $28,011 (single), you pay no Medicare levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, the levy is reduced at 10c per dollar. Above $35,013, you pay the full 2%.
The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) can reduce your tax. For 2026–27, the maximum offset is $700 for incomes up to $37,500, then it phases out. At $45,000 it drops to $325, and it reduces by 1.5c per dollar until it reaches zero at $66,667.
Example: Casual Employee on Minimum Wage
Let’s work through an example for a full-time casual employee working 38 hours per week, 52 weeks a year, at the minimum casual rate of $33.05 per hour.
- Gross annual pay: $33.05 × 38 × 52 = $65,306.80
- Tax on first $18,200: $0
- Tax on $18,201 to $45,000: ($45,000 – $18,200) × 0.15 = $4,020
- Tax on $45,001 to $65,306.80: ($65,306.80 – $45,000) × 0.30 = $6,092.04
- Total tax: $4,020 + $6,092.04 = $10,112.04
- Medicare levy: $65,306.80 × 0.02 = $1,306.14 (full rate, as income exceeds $35,013)
- LITO: $325 – [($65,306.80 – $45,000) × 0.015] = $325 – $304.60 = $20.40
- Total deductions: $10,112.04 + $1,306.14 – $20.40 = $11,397.78
- Annual take-home: $65,306.80 – $11,397.78 = $53,909.02
- Weekly take-home: $53,909.02 ÷ 52 ≈ $1,036.71
- Fortnightly take-home: $1,036.71 × 2 = $2,073.42
This is an estimate. Your actual tax may differ if you have HELP/HECS debt, salary sacrifice, or other factors. Use the Take-home pay guide for a more personalised calculation.
Important Considerations
- Superannuation: Your employer must pay 12% super on top of your ordinary time earnings from 1 July 2026. This is not deducted from your take-home pay; it goes into a super fund for your retirement.
- Medicare Levy Surcharge: If you are single and earn over $93,000 (or $186,000 for families) and do not have appropriate private hospital cover, you may pay an extra 1% to 1.5% surcharge. This is not included in the estimate above.
- Casual loading: The 25% loading is part of your ordinary hourly rate. It is not a separate payment. Your total ordinary hours are paid at $33.05 per hour.
- Award rates: If you are covered by an award, your minimum rate may be higher than the national minimum wage. Check your award using the Minimum wage page.
How to Use This Information
When you see a job advertised at the minimum casual wage, remember that the advertised rate is usually before tax and super. Your take-home will be lower due to tax and Medicare. Use the Tax and Medicare guide to understand your obligations. For a quick estimate, try the Clearance tool on this site.
Understanding your take-home pay helps you budget and compare job offers. The minimum casual wage in Australia provides a baseline, but many industries pay above the minimum. Always confirm your exact rate with your employer and check your pay slips.
Questions
What is the minimum casual wage in Australia for 2026-27?
From 1 July 2026, the national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for a 38-hour week. Casual employees not covered by an award or agreement must receive at least $33.05 per hour, which includes the 25% casual loading. Most employees are covered by an award, which may set higher rates.
How much tax will I pay on the minimum casual wage?
Tax depends on your total annual income. For a full-time casual earning $33.05 per hour for 38 hours a week over 52 weeks, your gross income is about $65,307. Using 2026-27 resident rates, you pay nil on the first $18,200, then 15c per dollar up to $45,000, and 30c per dollar on the remainder. After the Medicare levy (2%) and the Low Income Tax Offset, your estimated take-home is roughly $53,900 per year, or $1,037 per week. This is an estimate only and not a tax assessment.
Does the minimum casual wage include super?
No. The minimum wage rates set by Fair Work are base pay rates before superannuation. From 1 July 2026, employers must pay an additional 12% superannuation on top of your ordinary time earnings. Job advertisements often state the rate as 'plus super', meaning super is not deducted from your take-home pay.
