Your Mechanic Salary: Award Rates, Actual Earnings, and Take-Home Pay in 2026–27
A qualified mechanic earns at least $29.45 an hour under the Vehicle Repair award, but the ATO median for motor mechanics was $73,505 in 2023–24, and $112,515 for diesel mechanics.
Understanding the mechanic salary landscape
When you're comparing a job offer as a mechanic, the headline figure isn't what lands in your account. You need to look at the award minimum, what mechanics actually earn, and then subtract tax and the Medicare levy. This guide walks you through each step so you can compare offers on the basis of take-home pay.
Award minimum rates for qualified mechanics
Under the Vehicle Repair, Services and Retail Award, a qualified tradesperson (Certificate III) is classified as Tradesperson Level 1. From 1 July 2026, the minimum hourly rate is $29.45, which works out to $58,193 a year for a 38-hour week. If you hold a Certificate IV and use it in your role, you move to Tradesperson Level 2 at $32.22 an hour ($63,669 a year). Casual employees get a 25% loading, bringing the rate to $36.81 or $40.28 respectively.
These are the legal minimums. Many mechanics earn more, but the award gives you a baseline. For comparison, the national minimum wage is $26.44 an hour and $1,004.90 a week.
What mechanics actually earn
Award rates are a floor, not a ceiling. The Australian Taxation Office's 2023–24 tax data shows the median salary or wage for garage (motor) mechanics was $73,505, and for diesel motor mechanics it was $112,515. Jobs and Skills Australia reports a median weekly earnings of $1,622 for full-time motor mechanics (non-managerial), which equates to about $84,344 a year. That's well above the award minimum, reflecting overtime, allowances, and above-award pay common in the industry.
When you receive a job offer, ask whether the salary is "plus super" or inclusive. Super is 12% from 1 July 2026, and it's not deducted from your take-home pay if the ad says "plus super". Use our Super guide to understand the difference.
Take-home pay: what lands in your account
Your take-home pay is what remains after income tax and the Medicare levy. For a full-time mechanic on the award minimum of $58,193, your fortnightly take-home is about $1,891. That's after applying the 2026–27 tax rates and the full 2% Medicare levy (since your income is above the single threshold of $35,013).
If you earn the ATO median of $73,505, your take-home pay would be roughly $2,210 per fortnight. The exact figure depends on your tax file number declaration, any HELP/HECS debt, and whether you salary sacrifice. Our Take-home pay calculator can give you a personalised estimate.
Medicare levy thresholds
The latest published single-person Medicare thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. If your taxable income is below $28,011, you pay no Medicare levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, you pay at a reduced rate (10 cents per dollar over the lower threshold). Above $35,013, you pay the full 2%. Most full-time mechanics will pay the full levy.
Factors that affect your mechanic salary
Several factors can push your pay above the award minimum:
- Certificate IV: Holding a Certificate IV (e.g., Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis) and using it in your role moves you to Tradesperson Level 2, an extra $2.77 per hour.
- Tool allowance: If you supply your own hand tools, you're entitled to $13.86 per week under the award.
- Overtime and weekends: Saturday rates are 150% (e.g., $44.18 for Tradesperson Level 1), Sunday 200% ($58.90), and public holidays 250% ($73.63).
- Industry and location: Diesel mechanics, especially those working in mining or remote areas, often earn significantly more through enterprise agreements and allowances.
When comparing offers, look at the total package including super, allowances, and expected overtime. Then use our Tax and Medicare guide to estimate your take-home pay. That's the number that matters for your budget.
How to use this information
Start with the award rate as your safety net. Then check the ATO median for your specialisation to see what's typical. Finally, run the numbers through a take-home pay calculator to see what you'll actually receive each fortnight. This approach helps you evaluate offers on an equal footing, regardless of how the salary is advertised.
