Understanding your librarian salary after tax

If you work as a librarian in Australia, the amount that lands in your bank account each fortnight depends on your gross pay, your tax bracket, and the Medicare levy. This guide uses the latest public data to help you estimate your take-home pay.

Median librarian earnings from Jobs and Skills Australia

According to the Australian Government’s Jobs and Skills Australia profile for librarians (ANZSCO 2246), the median full-time weekly earnings are $1,841 before tax . That works out to about $95,732 a year if you work 52 weeks. The median hourly rate is $48, and 63% of librarians work full-time. The median age is 50, and 80% are women.

These figures are a guide only. Your actual librarian salary will vary by sector (public, academic, special, or school library), your experience level, and your location. The data excludes managers and part-time employees to give a more accurate comparison.

Public sector salary standards (NSW example)

The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) publishes salary standards for NSW public sector librarians, library technicians, and assistants . These are set under the Crown Employees Award and reflect the Equal Remuneration Principle. For 2026–27, the rates are:

  • Librarian Grade 1 (entry level): $78,000 (Year 1) to $101,911 (Year 6)
  • Librarian Grade 3 (experienced): $126,814 (Year 1) to $141,291 (Year 4)
  • Librarian Grade 5 (senior): $163,525 (Year 1) to $180,359 (Year 4)
  • Library Technician Grade 1: $78,000 (Year 1) to $92,632 (Year 4)
  • Library Assistant: $61,009 (Year 1) to $76,661 (Year 5)

Casual employees should receive at least a 20% loading on these rates. Other states and territories may have different awards or enterprise agreements.

How to calculate your take-home pay

To work out what clears after tax, start with your gross annual librarian salary. For 2026–27, the resident tax rates are:

  • $0 – $18,200: Nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
  • $190,001 and over: $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000

You may also be entitled to the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO), which can reduce tax by up to $700 for incomes up to $37,500, then phases out.

Medicare levy

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. For 2026–27, the single-person thresholds are $28,011 (lower) and $35,013 (upper). If your income is between these, you pay a reduced rate (10c per $1 over the lower threshold). Full-time librarians earning above $35,013 pay the full 2%.

Example: median librarian salary

Take a full-time librarian earning $95,732 per year ($1,841/week). Using the 2026–27 rates:

  • Tax on $95,732: $4,020 + 30% × ($95,732 – $45,000) = $4,020 + $15,219.60 = $19,239.60
  • Less LITO: at $95,732, LITO is $325 – 1.5% × ($95,732 – $45,000) = $325 – $760.98 = $0 (phased out completely above $66,667)
  • Medicare levy: 2% × $95,732 = $1,914.64
  • Total deductions: $19,239.60 + $1,914.64 = $21,154.24
  • Annual take-home: $95,732 – $21,154.24 = $74,577.76
  • Fortnightly take-home: $74,577.76 ÷ 26 = $2,868.38

This is a resident estimate only. It excludes HELP/HECS repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, salary packaging, and payroll tax-table rounding. Use the Clearance tool for a personalised calculation.

Superannuation is on top

From 1 July 2026, your employer must pay superannuation at 12% of your ordinary earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830. If your librarian salary is advertised as $95,732 plus super, your total remuneration is $107,220, but the super goes into your fund, not your bank account. If the salary is inclusive of super, your take-home will be lower.

Comparing to benchmarks

For context, the national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour and $1,004.90 per week (annualised $52,255). The average full-time adult ordinary time earnings are $2,083.70 per week ($108,352 annualised) Benchmarks. A librarian on the median $1,841/week earns about 12% less than the all-employees average for full-time workers.

Factors that affect your actual pay

  • Award vs enterprise agreement: Many librarians are covered by the Library Industry Award 2020 or a specific enterprise agreement. Check your classification and pay rate via the Fair Work Commission’s Modern Awards Pay Database .
  • Part-time work: 37% of librarians work part-time. Your take-home will be proportionally lower, but you may have a lower marginal tax rate.
  • Salary packaging: Public sector librarians can often salary package items like laptops or parking, reducing taxable income.
  • HELP/HECS: If you have a student loan, repayments are deducted at 1% to 10% of your income above the threshold ($51,550 in 2026–27).
