Your Take-Home Pay: What Clears After Tax

When you look at a job offer or a salary figure, the number that matters most is what lands in your bank account after the Australian Taxation Office takes its share. Whether you earn the national minimum wage or a figure as high as a lewis hamilton salary, the same withholding rules apply. This guide walks you through the 2026–27 tax rates, the Medicare levy, and how to estimate your after-tax income.

The 2026–27 Tax Brackets

The Australian Taxation Office publishes updated tax tables each year. For 2026–27, the rates for residents aged 18 and over are:

  • $0 – $18,200: Nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
  • $190,001 and over: $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000

These rates do not include the Medicare levy. The Tax and Medicare page on this site provides a full breakdown.

Medicare Levy: The 2% You Almost Always Pay

Most residents pay a Medicare levy of 2% of their taxable income. However, if your income is below a certain threshold, you may pay less or nothing. The latest published single-person thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. If you earn under $28,011, you pay no levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, the levy is 10c per dollar over the lower threshold. Above $35,013, the full 2% applies. For a full-time worker on the minimum wage (about $52,255 per year), the levy adds roughly $1,045 to your tax bill.

From Minimum Wage to a Lewis Hamilton Salary: The Same Rules

It does not matter if your salary is $52,255 or a figure like a lewis hamilton salary – the tax brackets and Medicare levy apply uniformly. The ATO’s withholding schedules ensure your employer deducts the correct amount each pay period. For very high incomes, the top marginal rate of 45% plus 2% Medicare levy means a combined marginal rate of 47%. There is no cap on taxable income.

Superannuation: Not Deducted from Take-Home Pay

When you see a salary quoted, it is often “plus super”. The superannuation guarantee rate is 12% from 1 July 2026, paid by your employer on top of your salary. Super is not deducted from your take-home pay; it is an additional contribution to your retirement fund. The Super guide explains how this works.

Estimating Your Take-Home Pay

To estimate your after-tax income, start with your gross annual salary. Subtract the tax calculated using the brackets above, then subtract the Medicare levy (2% of your taxable income, subject to thresholds). The result is your annual take-home pay. Divide by 26 for a fortnightly amount, or by 52 for weekly. Remember, this is an estimate – it excludes HELP/HECS repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary sacrifice arrangements. Use the Take-home pay calculator on this site for a personalised figure.

The National Minimum Wage Benchmark

Fair Work sets the national minimum wage. From 1 July 2026, the rate is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for a 38-hour week. This is before tax. An employee on this wage earning $52,255 annually would have tax and Medicare deducted as follows:

  • Tax on $52,255: $4,020 (on first $45,000) + 30c on $7,255 = $2,176.50, total $6,196.50
  • Medicare levy: 2% of $52,255 = $1,045.10
  • Total deductions: $7,241.60
  • Take-home: $45,013.40 per year (approximately $865 per week)

What If Your Salary Is Not a Fixed Figure?

For roles where pay varies – such as contract work or performance-based bonuses – the same tax brackets apply per pay period. The ATO provides tax tables for daily and casual workers. If you are earning a variable income, your employer withholds based on each payment. At year-end, your tax return reconciles the total.

Questions

How is the Medicare levy calculated on my salary?

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. If your income is below $28,011 (single), you pay no levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, the levy is 10c per dollar over the lower threshold. Above $35,013, the full 2% applies. These are the latest published single-person thresholds.

Does the minimum wage of $26.44 per hour include super?

No. The national minimum wage of $26.44 per hour (or $1,004.90 per week) is before tax and before super. Employers must also pay superannuation guarantee of 12% on top of this amount from 1 July 2026.

If I earn a very high income like a Lewis Hamilton salary, do the same tax brackets apply?

Yes. The 2026–27 tax brackets apply to all Australian residents. The top rate of 45c per dollar applies to income over $190,000. There is no cap on taxable income. Your employer withholds PAYG tax based on these rates, and you pay the Medicare levy on top.
