Childcare Educator Salary Guide 2026–27: Take-Home Pay After Tax
Pay varies by classification under the Children's Services Award, from introductory educator to director, with minimum hourly rates set by Fair Work and the Worker Retention Payment.
Your Childcare Educator Salary: What You Take Home
If you work in early childhood education, your childcare educator salary is set by the Children's Services Award 2010. From 1 July 2026, the Fair Work Commission's Annual Wage Review increased minimum rates, and a new eight-level classification structure applies. This guide shows you what those rates mean for your fortnightly take-home pay after income tax and the Medicare levy.
How the Award Classification Affects Your Pay
The award has eight levels for children's services employees, from Introductory Educator (Level 1) to Director (Level 8). There are also support worker levels. Your classification depends on your qualifications and experience. The Department of Education's Worker Retention Payment (WRP) adds extra funding to boost wages. For example, a Level 3 Qualified Educator must be paid at least $33.87 per hour including the WRP increase, according to the department's minimum rates table. The Fair Work Commission's Modern Awards Pay Database confirms these rates are operative from 1 July 2026.
What Changes Your Fortnightly Take-Home
Your take-home pay is your gross salary minus income tax and the Medicare levy. Here's what affects the amount that lands in your bank.
Tax Brackets and the Medicare Levy
For the 2026–27 tax year, the tax-free threshold is $18,200. After that, you pay:
- 15c per dollar from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30c per dollar from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37c per dollar from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45c per dollar above $190,000
The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) reduces your tax by up to $700 if your taxable income is $37,500 or less, then phases out. The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income, but if you earn below $28,011 (the single lower threshold) you pay no levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013 you pay a shaded rate of 10c per dollar over the lower threshold. Full-time educators earning above $35,013 pay the full 2%.
Super Is on Top
Your employer must pay superannuation at 12% of your ordinary time earnings from 1 July 2026. This is not deducted from your salary; it's paid separately into your super fund. So your take-home pay is calculated on your gross salary before super.
The Minimum Wage Benchmark
The national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour and $1,004.90 per week. Most childcare educators earn above this. For example, a Level 1 Introductory Educator starts at $28.81 per hour, which is already above the minimum. You can compare your rate to the minimum wage and other benchmarks on our site.
Take-Home Pay Examples
Based on the award rates from 1 July 2026, here are approximate take-home figures for a full-time educator working 38 hours per week, 52 weeks per year. These are estimates after income tax and the Medicare levy, using the ATO's 2026–27 tax tables. They exclude super, HELP/HECS, and salary packaging.
- Level 1 Introductory Educator: $28.81/hour → $56,930/year → about $1,859 per fortnight
- Level 3 Qualified Educator: $32.47/hour → $64,163/year → about $2,044 per fortnight
- Level 6 Room Leader: $38.25/hour → $75,582/year → about $2,341 per fortnight
- Level 8 Director: $46.12/hour → $91,140/year → about $2,748 per fortnight
These figures are sourced from 's analysis of the Fair Work Ombudsman pay guide. Your actual take-home may differ if you have tax offsets, deductions, or the Medicare levy surcharge.
Understanding Your Payslip
Your payslip shows your gross pay, then deductions for tax and Medicare. The Medicare levy is usually included in your tax withholding. If you earn below the threshold, you can claim the levy exemption when you lodge your tax return. For more on how tax and Medicare work, see our Tax and Medicare guide.
Questions
How is my childcare educator salary taxed?
Your salary is taxed at progressive rates: nil on the first $18,200, then 15c per dollar up to $45,000, then 30c up to $135,000. You also pay the 2% Medicare levy unless your income is below the single threshold of $28,011 (no levy) or between $28,011 and $35,013 (shaded rate). The Low Income Tax Offset reduces tax for incomes up to $66,667.
Does my take-home pay include superannuation?
No. Super is paid on top of your salary at 12% from 1 July 2026. Your take-home pay is your gross salary minus income tax and the Medicare levy. Super goes into your retirement account and is not deducted from your bank deposit.
