Compare Job Offers with Our After Tax Salary Calculator
Use our calculator to estimate your take-home pay based on your salary and the latest 2026–27 tax rates.
Compare Job Offers Using Take-Home Pay
When you receive a job offer, the headline salary can be misleading. What really matters is the amount that lands in your bank account each fortnight after income tax and the Medicare levy. Our after tax salary calculator helps you cut through the numbers and compare offers on an equal footing.
Understand the 2026–27 Tax Rates
The Australian Tax Office applies a progressive tax system. For the 2026–27 income year, the resident tax brackets are:
- $0 – $18,200: Nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15c per $1 over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c per $1 over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c per $1 over $135,000
- Over $190,000: $51,370 plus 45c per $1 over $190,000
You may also be eligible for the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO), which can reduce your tax by up to $700 if your taxable income is $37,500 or less. The offset phases out gradually and can only reduce your tax to zero.
The Medicare Levy
Most residents pay the Medicare levy at 2% of taxable income. However, if your income is below $28,011 (the single lower threshold), you pay nothing. Between $28,011 and $35,013, you pay 10c per dollar over the lower threshold. Above $35,013, the full 2% applies. These are the latest published single-person thresholds. Full-time salaries almost always fall into the full-rate zone.
Superannuation: What’s Deducted?
Super guarantee is 12% from 1 July 2026, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830. If a job offer states a salary “plus super”, the super is paid on top and does not reduce your take-home. If it says “including super”, the super is part of the package and your cash salary is lower. Always clarify this before comparing offers.
Using the After Tax Salary Calculator
Our take-home pay tool lets you enter your annual salary and instantly see your estimated fortnightly amount after tax and Medicare. You can also adjust for salary packaging or other deductions. To compare two offers, run each through the calculator and look at the net figures. Remember that the calculator is an estimate only – it excludes HELP/HECS repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, and payroll rounding.
Benchmark Figures for Context
To see how an offer stacks up, compare it to these benchmarks from official sources:
- National minimum wage: $26.44 per hour, $1,004.90 per week, or $52,255 per year (Fair Work Ombudsman, from 1 July 2026).
- All employees average weekly total earnings: $1,579.20 per week, $82,118 per year (ABS, May 2026, includes part-time).
- Full-time adult ordinary time earnings: $2,083.70 per week, $108,352 per year (ABS, excludes overtime and employer super).
These figures give you a sense of where a salary sits relative to the broader market.
Final Tips for Comparing Offers
- Always use the same assumptions (e.g., resident status, no HELP debt) when running the calculator.
- Factor in non-salary benefits like flexible hours, location, or career growth – but start with the hard numbers.
- Remember that the calculator provides an estimate, not a tax assessment. For precise figures, consult a tax professional or use the ATO’s own tools.
By focusing on take-home pay, you make a fair comparison between offers and avoid surprises when your first pay lands.

Questions
How do I calculate my take-home pay after tax and Medicare levy?
Start with your annual salary. Apply the 2026–27 resident tax rates: no tax on the first $18,200, then 15c per dollar up to $45,000, 30c per dollar up to $135,000, and so on. Subtract the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) if eligible. Then add the Medicare levy at 2% of taxable income (full rate applies to most full-time salaries). The result is your estimated annual tax and levy. Divide by 26 for a fortnightly take-home figure. Our after tax salary calculator does this automatically.
Does superannuation come out of my take-home pay?
If a job ad says 'plus super', the super guarantee (12% from 1 July 2026) is paid on top of your salary and does not reduce your take-home pay. If the ad says 'including super', the super is part of the total package and your take-home will be lower. Always check whether the salary figure is base or total package.
What are the Medicare levy thresholds for 2026–27?
The latest published single-person thresholds are $28,011 (lower) and $35,013 (upper). If your taxable income is below $28,011, you pay no Medicare levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, you pay 10c per dollar over the lower threshold. Above $35,013, you pay the full 2% on all taxable income. These thresholds apply to residents; families and seniors have different limits.
